SAFE RETURN HOME
The Safe Return Home Campaign is about dismantling the barriers and injustices that discriminate against formerly incarcerated community members. The following areas of work contribute to our campaign to make a safe return home for those who are returning from being incarcerated.
DISTRICT ATTORNEY ACCOUNTABILITY
We understand a truly safe home begins with how black and brown folks are targeted and put through the legal system. By involving formerly incarcerated communities in the District Attorney's office and affairs we not only educate ourselves but educate the DA and others in how a DA should be working in favor of communities not against them.
FORMALIZING LEGAL PROTECTION
We believe formerly incarcerated community members face tremendous amounts of barriers to a safe return home. They need legal protection because of being a protected class so they can be protected in places where they are most discriminated in the workplace and are often forced to work jobs that trap them in cycles of poverty.
SAFE RETURN FOR WOMEN, GIRLS AND GENDER NON-CONFORMING PEOPLE
Women, girls, and gender non-conforming people are grossly underrepresented in receiving care and support during incarceration and re-entry. Part of our work in creating a Safe Return Home is to make sure women, girls and gender non-conforming people are not neglected and instead supported in their effort to return safely home.
HOUSING INITIATIVES
Part of creating a safe home means stable and secure housing. In a time where gentrification and COVID-19 have created a complex crisis, our role is to ensure formerly incarcerated people don't become "lost through the cracks of the system" and instead included in measures that help protect and secure their ability to afford and live where they want free from discrimination.
COMMITMENT TO CONTRA COSTA
Safe Return Project began in Contra Costa and is dedicated to reaching out and building a base of civically engaged formerly incarcerated community members. Together with a coalition of allies, we believe in shaping a future that's built for all of us.
