WHO WAS RICHARD BOYD?
Richard was a revolutionary. He fought for what Martin Luther King called “A revolution of values.” He knew that if we could not overcome individualism, materialism, racism, and other divisive values, we would be unable to fix the more apparent problems like securing jobs, affordable housing, and quality education. He was deeply committed to the truth that Black people and all people of color deserve better from each other and the systems and ‘powers that
be.’ He had high expectations of us and was willing to work with anyone committed to making change. Richard believed that nobody is beyond restoration and that we all deserve the opportunity to rebuild ourselves, reconcile relationships, and care for our community.
RICHARD BOYD....
Richard Boyd passed on in 2018, and his legacy remains in Richmond. He was someone who exemplified peace and unity. Where the outside world sees broken and troubled people, Richard sees resilience, inspiration, and the future. As he would inspire you, he would be inspired by you. He mentored countless leaders in the Richmond community, including Safe Return Project’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, Tamisha Torres-Walker. Safe Return Project continues to
honor his spirit, legacy, and inspiration by giving back to the people who need it the most through radical transformation and leadership development in its Richard Boyd Fellowship program. Our fellowship program was named for Richard to support our fellows as change agents who were formerly incarcerated individuals to impact mass liberation.
